StemWave vs. PRP Therapy: Which Regenerative Treatment Is Right for You?
Two "Regenerative" Treatments — But They're Not the Same Thing
If you've been living with chronic pain — knee pain, a nagging shoulder, plantar fasciitis, or a stubborn soft-tissue injury — chances are someone has mentioned two options: PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy and StemWave® regenerative therapy.
Both get labeled "regenerative." Both are positioned as alternatives to surgery. But that's roughly where the similarities end. They work through completely different mechanisms, carry very different costs and risks, and produce different experiences for patients.
After 35+ years in practice, I've seen patients come to us after spending thousands on PRP injections with inconsistent results. I've also seen patients come in with skepticism about StemWave and leave after their first session saying, "I felt that immediately." This guide is the honest, no-spin comparison I wish more patients had access to before making a decision.
How PRP Therapy Works
PRP starts with your own blood. A provider draws a sample, spins it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injects that platelet-rich plasma directly into the damaged tissue.
The theory: concentrated platelets release growth factors that stimulate repair. The evidence is real — PRP does have legitimate clinical support for conditions like tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, and certain ligament injuries. It's used by orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians across the country.
But here's what those glossy sports medicine brochures often leave out:
- It requires a needle injection — directly into the affected joint or tissue. For some conditions (like knees), this means injecting into a space that's already painful and inflamed.
- It has significant downtime. Most PRP protocols call for rest and limited activity for days to weeks after injection. Some patients experience a temporary flare of pain before improvement begins.
- Results are inconsistent. Research outcomes vary widely depending on the condition, the concentration method, and the injector's skill. Some patients respond beautifully. Others see limited benefit.
- It's expensive — and rarely covered by insurance. PRP injections typically run $500–$2,500 per session, and most patients need multiple sessions. Out of pocket.
How StemWave® Therapy Works
StemWave® regenerative therapy uses focused acoustic waves — sound energy directed precisely at damaged tissue. Those waves create a biological response that:
- Increases blood flow to the damaged area
- Breaks up calcifications and scar tissue that block healing
- Activates resident stem cells already present in your body's tissue
- Triggers the release of growth factors and anti-inflammatory compounds
In plain terms: StemWave tells your body where the damage is and activates its own repair system — from the outside, without needles, injections, or downtime.
Sessions take 5–6 minutes. Patients walk in, get treated, and walk out. Most feel something during treatment — a mild, deep sensation — and many notice improvement within their first few sessions. Some patients report meaningful relief after just one visit.
The Side-by-Side Comparison
Factor: How it works | PRP Therapy: Injected growth factors from your own blood | StemWave® Therapy: Acoustic waves activate your body's built-in repair system
Factor: Needles / injections | PRP Therapy: Yes — blood draw + injection into tissue | StemWave® Therapy: None
Factor: Downtime | PRP Therapy: Days to weeks of restricted activity | StemWave® Therapy: None — resume normal activity immediately
Factor: Session length | PRP Therapy: 30–60 minutes (including blood draw) | StemWave® Therapy: 5–6 minutes
Factor: Cost per session | PRP Therapy: $500–$2,500 | StemWave® Therapy: $90–$150 ($49 intro trial at Consales)
Factor: Insurance coverage | PRP Therapy: Rarely covered | StemWave® Therapy: Typically not covered (but far less costly)
Factor: Speed of results | PRP Therapy: Weeks to months; possible flare before improvement | StemWave® Therapy: Many patients feel results in 1–5 sessions
Factor: Pairs with other treatments | PRP Therapy: Sometimes — provider dependent | StemWave® Therapy: Yes — routinely combined with laser, decompression, Knee On Trac, NRT
What Patients Are Saying About StemWave
Jerold Augustine came to us with pain and swelling in his right knee — stiffness in the morning, intense pain after walking or climbing. After treatment, he described it simply: "Fast results — lifestyle back to normal."
Judith L. Cohen had severe leg pain, heel spurs, and tendinitis that was limiting her ability to walk and exercise. After her treatment plan, she was "pain-free, walking again, and back to her exercise routine."
These aren't outliers. They're consistent with what we see when StemWave is combined with the right supporting therapies — which brings us to the bigger picture.
The Real Advantage of StemWave: It's Part of a System
One of the limitations of PRP — even when it works well — is that it's a standalone intervention. You get the injection, you rest, and you wait.
At Consales Chiropractic, StemWave is one component of a whole-body healing system. Depending on your condition, it's combined with:
- Class IV deep-tissue laser therapy to reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue healing
- Knee On Trac™ for patients with chronic knee pain or arthritis
- Spinal decompression for disc-related pain or stenosis
- Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) to ensure your body has the raw materials — the specific nutrients — it needs to actually complete the repair
That last one is the part most practices miss entirely. You can activate your body's healing response all day long, but if you're nutritionally depleted in the minerals and cofactors that drive tissue repair, healing stalls. NRT identifies those deficiencies precisely — and addresses them with targeted supplementation.

When PRP Might Still Make Sense
To be fair: PRP isn't without merit. For patients who have tried conservative care and are looking for an injection-based option before committing to surgery, PRP is a reasonable consideration — particularly for certain tendon and ligament conditions. If your orthopedist recommends it and you're not a candidate for other approaches, it's worth exploring.
But for the vast majority of patients dealing with knee pain, chronic soft-tissue injuries, plantar fasciitis, shoulder problems, or neuropathy — StemWave offers a more accessible, lower-risk, and often faster path to relief.
Try StemWave for $49 — Before You Spend Thousands Elsewhere
We offer a $49 introductory StemWave session — because we want you to feel the difference before you commit to anything. Most patients feel something meaningful in that first visit. From there, you and Dr. Consales will discuss a realistic treatment plan based on your specific condition and goals.
If you're in Western PA — White Oak, North Huntingdon, McKeesport, Irwin, Greensburg — and you're weighing your options, don't spend $2,000 on a PRP injection before you've tried a $49 session of something that works without the needle.
Call us at (412) 678-9123 or contact us online to schedule your introductory StemWave session. We're here Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday — 9AM–1PM and 3–7PM.
