Nutrition Response Testing for Autoimmune Conditions: A Functional Approach to Calming an Overactive System
If You Have an Autoimmune Condition, You've Probably Been Told to Manage It — Not Fix It
Rheumatoid arthritis. Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Graves' disease. Lupus. Ulcerative colitis. Psoriasis. These are conditions that carry very different names but share a common core: your immune system has turned on your own tissue and won't stand down.
Standard medical treatment for most autoimmune conditions follows a predictable arc: suppress the immune response. Prednisone. Biologics. Immunosuppressants. These medications can be lifesaving in acute situations — but they carry significant side effects, they require indefinite use, and they treat the overactive immune response rather than asking why the immune system went haywire in the first place.
That question — why — is where Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) begins.
The Nutritional Foundation of Immune Function
Your immune system is not a switch. It's an extraordinarily complex network of signaling molecules, white blood cells, regulatory proteins, and barrier tissues — and every single one of those components requires specific nutrients to function correctly.
When the body is chronically deficient in certain vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, or specific micronutrients, the immune system's regulatory function can break down. It loses the ability to distinguish self from non-self. It loses the "off" signal that would normally end an inflammatory response. Immune cells that should be protecting you begin attacking your joints, your thyroid, your gut lining, your skin.
The standard blood panel your doctor runs doesn't assess most of these deficiencies. "Normal" lab results don't mean your body has what it needs — they mean your values fell within a population reference range. That's a very different thing.
Nutrition Response Testing is designed to go deeper.
What NRT Actually Tests
NRT is a non-invasive, clinically-structured assessment developed over decades by Dr. Freddie Ulan. It uses the body's own neurological responses — specifically, how specific muscles respond to gentle pressure while different organs and systems are being evaluated — to identify where the body's regulatory function is being most heavily stressed.
At Consales Chiropractic, the NRT evaluation also includes Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing, which measures the autonomic nervous system's adaptive capacity. Low HRV is one of the most reliable indicators of chronic physiological stress — and it's commonly seen in autoimmune patients whose nervous systems have been in a state of sustained alarm for years.
Together, these tools give Dr. Consales a picture of:
- Which organs and systems are under the most stress
- What nutritional deficiencies are most likely driving that stress
- What targeted, whole-food-based supplements your specific body is asking for
- How your nervous system is coping — or not coping — with the overall load
This is not a one-size-fits-all protocol. Two patients with the same autoimmune diagnosis may have completely different nutritional pictures — and they'll receive completely different programs.
How Nutritional Support Addresses Autoimmune Drivers
When the right nutritional deficiencies are identified and corrected, several things can shift for autoimmune patients:
Gut Barrier Integrity
A significant body of research now links autoimmune conditions to increased intestinal permeability — often called "leaky gut." When the lining of the gut is compromised, partially-digested proteins pass into the bloodstream and trigger immune responses. Nutrients like zinc, vitamin D, glutamine, and specific probiotics play a central role in gut barrier repair. NRT can identify whether gut-related stress is present — and target it directly.
Thyroid Function
Hashimoto's and Graves' disease — the two most common autoimmune thyroid conditions — are heavily influenced by nutrient status. Selenium is particularly critical: it's required for the enzyme that converts inactive thyroid hormone to its active form, and it plays a direct role in protecting the thyroid gland from the oxidative damage that drives autoimmune attacks. Iodine, vitamin D, magnesium, and iron all affect thyroid function as well. NRT assesses the thyroid's stress level and identifies which of these the body is most deficient in.
Inflammatory Regulation
Chronic autoimmune inflammation requires a sustained anti-inflammatory nutritional posture. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, magnesium, and specific botanical compounds act as the raw materials for the body's natural anti-inflammatory signaling. Without them, even the best chiropractic or medical treatment is working against headwinds.
Adrenal and Nervous System Support
Chronic illness is profoundly stressful — and chronic stress depletes the adrenal glands' capacity to produce cortisol, the body's primary anti-inflammatory hormone. Many autoimmune patients are caught in a vicious cycle: the condition depletes their stress-response system, which reduces the body's ability to regulate inflammation, which worsens the condition. Targeted adrenal support — identified through NRT's organ-stress assessment — can help break that cycle.
What Western PA Autoimmune Patients Have Experienced
We want to be honest: NRT is not a cure for autoimmune disease. The immune system's misdirected programming doesn't always fully reverse. But for many patients, identifying and correcting the nutritional drivers of their condition produces changes they didn't expect — and that their previous providers couldn't explain.
Carol Miller came to Consales Chiropractic after a confirmed Graves' disease diagnosis. She had been referred to an endocrinologist and was facing aggressive medical intervention. Through Dr. Consales' nutritional program, her thyroid normalized. She was eventually cleared for pregnancy — something her physicians said would require her condition to be medically controlled first.
Tony M. had been living with ulcerative colitis and GERD for years, spending hundreds of dollars monthly on prescription medications. After working through an NRT-guided nutritional program, he was able to come off all prescription medication, resume eating normally, and experience complete digestive relief.
Denise B. developed shingles, and the neurological pain persisted well beyond the acute phase. Through NRT, Dr. Consales also identified underlying thyroid and cholesterol imbalances. She lost weight, normalized her thyroid and cholesterol markers, and came off all medications — changes her conventional physicians hadn't been able to produce.
These are not typical outcomes for every patient — but they illustrate what becomes possible when you identify and address the nutritional root causes of immune dysfunction, rather than managing only its symptoms.
Who Is the Best Candidate for NRT With an Autoimmune Condition?
NRT is a particularly strong fit if you:
- Have a confirmed autoimmune condition and want to address it from a root-cause angle alongside (or instead of) medication
- Have symptoms strongly suggestive of autoimmune activity but labs come back "normal" — leaving you without answers
- Are experiencing autoimmune flares that seem linked to stress, diet, or other lifestyle factors
- Want to reduce your dependence on immunosuppressive medications (always in coordination with your physician)
- Have tried dietary changes on your own but aren't sure whether you're targeting the right things for your specific body
- Deal with chronic fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, or digestive issues alongside your diagnosed condition
What the NRT Process Looks Like
The initial NRT evaluation at Consales Chiropractic costs $175 (promotional rate) and includes the full body-scan assessment, HRV testing, and Dr. Consales' clinical review of your results. Karen Consales, who manages our HRV testing and nutritional support program, is a key part of making sure patients feel informed and supported throughout the process.
From there, you receive a customized supplement protocol based on your body's specific findings — not a generic wellness package. The investment in the follow-up program varies depending on what your body needs. We believe in full transparency, so we'll walk you through everything before you commit to anything.
This is a 12-session program with ongoing monitoring. We re-test at each session to confirm your body is responding and adjust as needed.
The Whole-Body Framework Behind This Approach
Nutritional support doesn't exist in isolation at this practice. When we discover that a patient's autoimmune condition has structural components — chronic inflammation driving joint damage, nervous system dysregulation, or pain that's affecting their ability to manage stress — we integrate chiropractic care and our other therapies around the NRT program.
This is the Consales Chiropractic whole-body approach: Signal healing. Fuel the repair. Make the results hold. If the body is in structural disarray while we're trying to restore its nutritional foundation, we're working against ourselves. If we're adjusting and treating structurally but the body lacks the nutrients to complete the repair, same problem. The two work together — and for complex autoimmune patients, that integration is often what makes the difference between partial improvement and genuine recovery.
