Functional Nutrition vs. Generic Diet Advice: Why "Eat Better" Isn't Enough
You're Eating "Right" and Still Don't Feel Right
You cut back on sugar. You added more vegetables. Maybe you tried going gluten-free, or taking a multivitamin a friend swore by. And you still wake up tired, your digestion is unpredictable, and your doctor says your labs look "normal."
If that's you, you're not doing it wrong. You're getting advice written for the average person, and you aren't the average person. I'm Dr. Anthony Consales, and after more than 35 years in practice I've watched thousands of patients run into exactly this wall. That's where functional nutrition comes in.
What Functional Nutrition Actually Means
Functional nutrition is a way of looking at your health that starts with a different question. Instead of asking "what is your diagnosis, and which standard recommendation goes with it?", it asks "which systems in your body are under stress, and what do they need in order to work properly?"
In practice, that means a few things:
- It's individualized. Two people with the same symptom, like fatigue, can have completely different underlying drivers: gut function, adrenal stress, thyroid, nutrient gaps, or a nervous system stuck in overdrive.
- It looks upstream. The goal is to find what's producing the symptom, not just quiet it.
- It treats the body as connected. Digestion, hormones, immune function, sleep and pain all influence each other.
- It's measured over time. A plan is judged by how you respond over weeks and months, and adjusted as you change.
Where Generic Diet Advice Breaks Down
General nutrition guidelines are a reasonable starting point for a population. They just aren't built to answer why you feel the way you do. Here's where I see them fall short:
"Take a good multivitamin"
A one-size supplement can't account for what you personally are low on, or what your body is struggling to absorb. Taking more of something you already have enough of doesn't help, and missing the one thing you need won't either.
"Your labs are normal"
Standard bloodwork is designed to catch disease states. Being inside a population reference range doesn't mean you're functioning at your best. It means you haven't crossed a diagnostic line yet. Normal labs are good news, but they're not an explanation for how you feel.
"Just eat clean and manage stress"
Sound advice, but it skips the specifics. Which foods are working against your digestion? Which body system is carrying the heaviest load right now? Without those answers, you're guessing.
How We Do Functional Nutrition at Consales Chiropractic
Our approach is Nutrition Response Testing (NRT), a hands-on assessment that helps us identify which body systems appear to be under stress and which nutritional supports to try first. Here's how it works in our office:
- A full health history so we understand your story, not just your current symptoms
- A body scan using muscle testing to narrow down the systems that need support
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing, led by Karen Consales, an instrument-measured look at how your nervous system is coping with stress
- A personalized, whole-food-based supplement protocol matched to what we find, not a generic package
- 12 follow-up sessions to see how you're responding and adjust the plan
The initial evaluation is $175 (promo). The investment in the full program varies with your personalized supplement protocol, and we'll walk you through everything before you commit to anything.
I want to be honest about the evidence, too. Muscle testing is a practitioner-guided assessment, not a laboratory diagnostic, and published research on it is limited. That's why we pair it with HRV, a thorough history and structured follow-up, and why NRT works alongside your medical care, never in place of it. If you want the full, candid picture, read our honest answer on whether NRT is legitimate, or our complete guide to how NRT works.
Why It Fits a Chiropractic Practice
People are sometimes surprised that a chiropractor does this. To me it's the natural pairing. At our practice, structural therapies like StemWave and chiropractic adjustments signal the body to heal, and nutrition fuels the repair so the results hold. That's the idea behind our whole-body approach: seven healing therapies, one root-cause system.
It's also why many of our pain patients end up doing the nutrition piece. Tissue can only rebuild as well as the raw materials allow.
What Patients Have Told Us
Every body is different and results vary, but here's what some of our patients have shared:
- Sallie Saula, a patient for more than 10 years, was waking up groggy and stiff after 8 or 9 hours of sleep. After the nutrition program she reported no more fatigue and no more naps.
- Kelly M. came in with brain fog, exhaustion, allergies and eczema. She told us she feels clear-headed and "like a new person."
- Joyce Yovetich reported her cholesterol dropping from 277 to 186 and her triglycerides from 435 to 148 while losing 16 pounds and getting her energy back.
- Sharon Michalski lost 40 pounds, and described better sleep, more energy and being able to exercise again.
You can read more on our patient stories page and see how this works for specific concerns in our posts on chronic fatigue and hormonal imbalance and autoimmune conditions.
Is This the Right Fit for You?
A functional approach tends to be a good match if you:
- Have been told your tests are normal but still feel unwell
- Deal with ongoing fatigue, digestive trouble, skin issues or mood swings
- Have a diagnosed condition and want to support the nutritional side alongside your doctor's care
- Are working on a pain problem with us and want your body to heal as well as it can
- Are tired of guessing which supplements or foods are right for you
It isn't a fit if you need urgent medical care or a guaranteed outcome. Nobody can honestly promise one.
