Chronic Back Pain Treatment Without Surgery: How Western PA Patients Are Finally Getting Lasting Relief

If you've been dealing with chronic back pain for months — or years — you already know the routine. You've tried ibuprofen. Maybe a round of physical therapy. Perhaps a cortisone injection that helped for a few weeks before the pain crept right back.

And somewhere along the way, a doctor mentioned surgery.

Before you go down that road, read this. Because there's a better option — one that addresses why your back hurts, not just the symptoms. And it's available right here in White Oak, PA, minutes from North Huntingdon, McKeesport, and Irwin.

Why Chronic Back Pain Is So Hard to Beat

Most back pain treatments are designed for acute pain — the kind that shows up after a strain and resolves in a few weeks. Chronic back pain (pain lasting 12 weeks or longer) is a fundamentally different problem.

Chronic back pain typically involves one or more of the following:

  • Disc degeneration or herniation — worn or bulging discs that compress nerves and restrict movement
  • Spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves
  • Inflammation that won't resolve — chronic tissue inflammation that masks and amplifies pain signals
  • Structural misalignment — vertebrae that are chronically out of position, constantly stressing surrounding tissues
  • Nutritional deficiencies — the body literally lacking the raw materials to repair damaged tissue

Standard treatments — medications, single-modality physical therapy, and most basic chiropractic adjustments — address one piece of this puzzle. That's why the relief is always temporary. The underlying cause is still there.

At Consales Chiropractic, we treat all of it.

Our Multi-Therapy Approach to Chronic Back Pain

Dr. Anthony Consales has spent 35+ years treating back pain — and the most important lesson he's learned is this: the patients who get lasting results are the ones who receive the right combination of therapies, not just one.

Here's how we typically approach chronic back pain at our White Oak practice:

1. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

If your pain involves disc herniation, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis, spinal decompression therapy may be the most important thing you try before scheduling surgery.

Using a motorized traction table, we gently and precisely stretch the spine — creating negative pressure inside the disc. This pulls herniated or bulging disc material back toward the center, reducing nerve compression and allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to flood back into the disc tissue.

Patients often describe immediate relief of nerve-related leg pain and tingling after just a few sessions. Over a full course of treatment, many patients who were told they needed surgery find that they simply don't need it anymore.

2. StemWave® Regenerative Therapy

StemWave® therapy uses FDA-registered acoustic wave technology to trigger your body's own cellular repair response. The waves penetrate deep into tissue, activating stem cell activity, increasing blood flow, and breaking up the calcified and fibrous tissue that can become a permanent source of pain.

For chronic back pain patients, StemWave is particularly effective when inflammation has become entrenched — when the tissue has been irritated for so long that the body's normal healing response has essentially given up. StemWave essentially restarts that healing process.

Sessions are 5–6 minutes. No needles, no drugs, no downtime. Many patients feel a noticeable difference within the first 1–5 sessions. We offer a $49 introductory trial so you can experience it before committing to a full program.

3. Class IV Laser Therapy

Deep-tissue Class IV laser therapy penetrates beneath the skin to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, accelerate tissue repair, and provide significant pain relief. Unlike surface-level treatments, Class IV laser energy reaches the muscles, ligaments, and disc tissue that are the actual source of your pain.

We also offer Erchonia low-level laser therapy — a cold laser option with FDA clearance for specific indications. The two laser systems work through different mechanisms, and Dr. Consales will determine which is most appropriate based on your presentation.

4. Chiropractic Adjustments + Structural Integration

Chiropractic adjustments restore proper alignment and mobility to the vertebrae — reducing the mechanical stress that fuels chronic inflammation. Combined with structural integration (which works on the muscles, fascia, and soft tissue that hold the spine in position), adjustments can address the underlying biomechanical patterns that keep your back stuck in a pain cycle.

5. Nutrition Response Testing — The Step Most Practices Skip

Here's something most chiropractors never consider: your body can't repair tissue it doesn't have the raw materials to fix.

Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) is a non-invasive body scan that identifies precisely which nutrients your system is deficient in. Chronic inflammation, poor tissue repair, and persistent pain often have a nutritional component — and no amount of physical therapy will fix a problem that is partly biochemical.

Karen Consales conducts HRV testing alongside NRT to get a complete picture of how your nervous system is functioning. The result is a customized supplement protocol that gives your body what it needs to actually complete the healing that our structural therapies initiate.

This is the step that separates Consales Chiropractic from every other practice in Western PA — and it's why our results hold. Learn more about how we combine all of these tools at our whole-body approach page.

Real Patient Stories

Kathy Jean Artman came to us with lower back pain so severe it was "locked up," along with foot pain and constant fatigue. After treatment: "Foot pain gone, I can touch my toes now, and my energy is wonderful!"

Sharon Michalski had back pain alongside digestive problems, insomnia, and depression. After her program: "I have lost 40 pounds, I'm sleeping better, my depression is gone, and I have more energy. I'm exercising again."

Betty Jane Berich came to us with excruciating sciatic leg pain — unable to walk. After treatment with Dr. Consales: "He freed me from my excruciating pain… I am pain-free, walking again, and fully healed."

These aren't outliers. They're what happens when you treat the whole person, not just the symptom.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Non-Surgical Back Pain Treatment?

You may be an excellent candidate for our approach if you:

  • Have had back pain for 3+ months that hasn't responded to standard treatments
  • Have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, bulging disc, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis
  • Are trying to avoid back surgery or delay it as long as possible
  • Have experienced only temporary relief from cortisone shots or physical therapy
  • Are dealing with associated leg pain, numbness, or tingling (often a nerve compression issue)
  • Want to address the root cause — not just manage the pain

Ready to Get Your Life Back?

Chronic back pain doesn't have to be a life sentence. But it won't fix itself — and the longer underlying disc and nerve issues go unaddressed, the harder they become to treat.
