Can a Chiropractor Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Dr. Anthony Consales

That Tingling in Your Hands Isn't Something You Have to Live With

You wake up in the middle of the night with your hands completely numb. You shake them out, wait for the feeling to return, and eventually drift back to sleep — only for it to happen again. During the day, you drop things you shouldn't, struggle to type, or notice a burning ache that runs from your wrist up into your fingers. You've probably been told it's carpal tunnel syndrome. And you may have already been told that surgery is your only real option.

I want to challenge that assumption.

At Consales Chiropractic, we've helped patients throughout the White Oak, North Huntingdon, and McKeesport area find real, lasting relief from carpal tunnel symptoms — without drugs, without surgery, and without the months of recovery that come with an invasive procedure. Here's what most people aren't told about carpal tunnel, and how we approach it differently.

What's Actually Happening With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve — which travels from your neck, down your arm, through a narrow passage in your wrist called the carpal tunnel — gets compressed or irritated. That nerve is responsible for sensation and movement in your thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of your ring finger. When it's under pressure, you get the classic symptoms: numbness, tingling, burning, weakness in grip, and pain that can radiate up the arm.

Most people think of carpal tunnel as a wrist problem. The conventional treatment focuses entirely on the wrist — a brace, steroid injections, or eventually surgery to cut the transverse carpal ligament and relieve the pressure.

But here's what that approach misses: the median nerve doesn't start at your wrist.

The Real Source of the Problem Is Often Higher Up

The median nerve originates from nerve roots in your cervical spine — specifically the C6, C7, and C8 vertebrae in your neck. From there, it travels through your shoulder, down through the elbow, along the forearm, and finally through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. Anywhere along that path, compression or irritation can trigger carpal tunnel-like symptoms.

This is why so many people have carpal tunnel surgery and still have symptoms afterward. The surgeon fixed one piece of the puzzle — the wrist — but the nerve was being irritated at multiple points the whole time.

In our practice, we look at the entire nerve pathway. Common contributing factors we find include:

  • Cervical spine misalignment — Subluxations in the neck can put pressure directly on the nerve roots that feed into the median nerve, amplifying symptoms at the wrist
  • Elbow dysfunction — The median nerve passes through the elbow joint, and restrictions here can create or worsen compression further down the arm
  • Wrist misalignment — The small bones of the wrist (carpal bones) can shift out of proper position, narrowing the carpal tunnel itself
  • Soft tissue inflammation — Swelling and scar tissue within the tunnel put direct pressure on the nerve

When you address all of these factors together, the results are dramatically better than treating the wrist alone.

How We Treat Carpal Tunnel at Consales Chiropractic

Chiropractic Adjustments to the Wrist, Elbow, and Cervical Spine

Our chiropractic adjustments for carpal tunnel go well beyond the wrist. During your initial evaluation, we assess your entire upper kinetic chain — from the neck down through the elbow to the wrist — to identify exactly where the nerve is being compromised.

Gentle, precise adjustments to the cervical spine can relieve pressure at the nerve roots where the problem often begins. Adjustments to the elbow and the small carpal bones of the wrist restore proper alignment and joint mechanics, reopening the space the median nerve needs to function without interference.

Many patients notice improvement in their symptoms within the first few visits — not because we're masking the pain, but because we're actually correcting the mechanical dysfunction that's causing it.

StemWave® Regenerative Therapy — Reducing Inflammation at the Source

One of the biggest reasons carpal tunnel symptoms persist — even after chiropractic care or surgery — is chronic inflammation within the tunnel itself. Inflamed tendons and connective tissue take up space, leaving even less room for the median nerve to pass through freely.

This is where our StemWave® therapy becomes a game-changer.

StemWave uses targeted acoustic wave technology to penetrate deep into the tissue around the carpal tunnel. These acoustic waves stimulate your body's own stem cells and growth factors, triggering a natural healing response that reduces inflammation, breaks down scar tissue, and promotes genuine tissue repair — not just temporary relief.

Sessions are just 5 to 6 minutes long, completely non-invasive, require no drugs, and have zero downtime. You come in, we treat the area, and you go about your day. We are the only provider offering StemWave within 100 miles of the Western PA area, and the results we're seeing for nerve-related conditions like carpal tunnel are remarkable.

When combined with chiropractic adjustments, StemWave addresses both the structural misalignment contributing to compression and the inflammation that keeps the nerve irritated. That combination is why our patients get outcomes that a brace or a cortisone shot simply can't deliver.

How Does This Compare to Carpal Tunnel Surgery?

Carpal tunnel release surgery has a reasonable success rate, but it comes with real downsides that don't always get discussed upfront:

  • Recovery typically takes 4–12 weeks, often longer for full grip strength
  • Scar tissue can form after surgery, sometimes recreating compression over time
  • If the nerve was also compressed at the neck or elbow, surgery won't resolve those contributions — and symptoms often return
  • As with any surgery, there are risks of infection, nerve damage, and anesthesia complications

Our approach is non-surgical, non-invasive, and works by correcting the actual mechanical and inflammatory causes of your symptoms. For patients who have already had surgery but still have symptoms, chiropractic care and StemWave can still help — because the nerve pathway above the wrist was likely never addressed.

We're not anti-surgery. There are cases where it's the right choice. But in our experience, most carpal tunnel patients have never been offered a thorough conservative approach before being handed a surgical referral. We think you deserve that option first.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

When you come in to Consales Chiropractic for carpal tunnel symptoms, we start with a comprehensive evaluation — not just of your wrist, but of your entire spine and upper extremity. We need to understand where your nerve is being compromised before we can build the right plan to fix it.

From there, we'll walk you through what we found, explain your treatment options clearly, and give you realistic expectations about how many sessions it will likely take to see results. No vague promises, no pressure — just honest answers about what we can do for you.
