What Are PRP Injections And How Do They Work?

If you’ve been researching regenerative medicine, you probably came across the term PRP Injection. But what does that mean? How does this natural, non-invasive treatment actually work? And how can you benefit from them? We address all of those questions in this post.

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is solution created from a small sample of your blood. Once the doctor draws your blood, he or she will spin it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma in your blood from the platelets. The highly-concentrated platelets are then injected directly into damaged tissue to stimulate the body’s own healing process for pain relief or for aesthetic reasons.

When spun in a centrifuge, your blood separates into its different components.

Benefits of PRP Injections

There are several benefits to using PRP injections. First, it is an all-natural treatment derived from your own blood. There is no need for risky surgical procedures or potentially addictive pain medication, and it works to treat the cause of your pain or condition, not just the symptoms. Second, there is very little downtime and you can resume your normal activities after the treatment. And since the injection is made using your own blood, there is little risk of rejection, so it can get to work and create the healing effect you need.

Platelet-rich plasma treatment is effective for a range of different issues that include:

  • Knee pain
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Damaged cartilage
  • Torn ligaments
  • Joint pain
  • Neuropathy
  • Plantar fasciitis

Ask your doctor about PRP Injections

It’s important to remember that pain is your body’s way of telling you something bigger is going on. It is a symptom and not the condition itself. When you use pain medication to mask the symptom, the root cause is never addressed and it will just continue a dangerous cycle indefinitely. If the cause is repaired and healed, there is no reason for the pain to exist any longer, so it will stop.

Next time you visit your doctor, ask about PRP injections. Even if their office does not offer it, perhaps there is a clinic nearby that does. Here in White Oak, PA, our clinic does offer these injections as part of our regenerative medicine treatment offerings. If you happen to be near us, please stop in or call to schedule an appointment!
